Formula One racing, or F1, is the technology laboratory for motor racing competitions. The word "formula" in the name alludes to the rules that must be followed by all participants' vehicles. Since its inception in 1946, the FIA Formula One World Championship has been one of the most prestigious forms of motorsport in the world. The Formula One Group owns and operates the highest level of single-seat, open-wheel, and open-cockpit professional motor racing competition sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). A Formula One season consists of a series of races known as Grands Prix that take place on purpose-built circuits and public roads around the world.
